Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are by far the leading downsizing and miniaturization technology among passive components.
They are generally the capacitor of choice for applications where small-value capacitances are needed, used as bypass capacitors, in op-amp circuits, filters, and more.
Advantages of MLCC include:
• Small parasitic inductance give better high-frequency performance compared to aluminum electrolytic capacitors.
• Better stability over temperature, depending on the temperature coefficient.
• high voltage and high heat resistance
• wide operating temperature range
• low cost and stable
Disadvantages
• Small capacitance per volume, especially for class 1 dielectric materials (NO/COG).
• DC bias instability.
MLCCs are made of alternating layers of metallic electrodes and dielectric ceramic
There are now a number of ceramic materials and compositions that are used in ceramic capacitors. These include ceramic NPO (COG), ceramic X7R, ceramic X5R, and ceramic Y5V.
Surface mount ceramic capacitors are available in sizes ranging from 0402 to 2225. Kingtronics also offers larger-sized ceramic capacitors on a custom basis.
